Advice for the new Muslimah

Salaam,

My hopes is that this blog can become a reference for new muslimah's like myself..There is so much to learn about Islam, being a woman in Islam, and what to expect. However, Iam finding the road to knowledge more lonely than I had anticipated and wonders if there are others in my shoes? If so leave a message, lets try to learn from one another. Sisters with good advice please feel free to share your wisdom with us newbies..:)

Lol subhanallah I was on your blog at the same time as you were on mine :D

In this day and age, I think my one most important piece of advice (which may sound strange) is : BEWARE of the Internet. You may have realised already, but there are so many conflicting opinions, ideas and groups on the Web that will easily confuse even those who were brought up Muslim. Personally, I don't think the Internet in the place to learn about serious matters, though I appreciate that for some sisters they really have no other option. The best thing I find though is to learn from books - they don't shout at or judge you, and you can choose when to read them and when to put them away, and the content is always there for you to go back to whenever you like.

I don't know what your level of knowledge is, but one book that covers all the basics is 'Tawhid and Fiqh' by Aisha Lemu, you can find it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Tawhid-fiqh-jurisprudence-Islamic-studies/dp/B0007CCAJA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222288167&sr=8-1

It's meant for younger children, but I think it acts as a good reference for the basics of prayer, fasting, hajj, ablution, ghusl, zakat, etc. If you want something a little more in-depth, then I'd recommend 'Islam in Focus' by Hammudah Abdalati, also on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Islam-Focus-Hammudah-Abdalati/dp/0892591358/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222288387&sr=1-1

I hope that helps, and let me know if you need any other good books, I'm a bit of a bookworm :)
